Terms and conditions

Melville Open Studios program is an artist-driven community art event, supported by the City of Melville that aims to:

  • Promote Melville as a cultural destination and attract visitors.

  • Support local artists & encourage greater investment in the cultural economy.

  • Enhance greater wellbeing, engagement and connectivity in the City of Melville community.

Melville Open Studios is focused on promoting a range of practicing artists producing original works with studios based within the City of Melville boundaries along with galleries, members of the many arts groups located within the City, and other associated businesses and is open to artists at varying levels of experience. 

Terms and Conditions 

By participating in Melville Open Studios artists, creative arts groups & associations, galleries, and associated businesses are deemed to accept the Terms & Conditions detailed below:

  1. Melville Open Studios is open to:

  • practicing artists producing original works with studios based within the City of Melville boundaries:

  • members of creative arts groups or associations based within the City of Melville boundaries;

  • galleries and artist run initiatives based within the City of Melville boundaries; or special guest artists providing demonstrations or activities at creative or arts related businesses based within the City of Melville boundaries

  1. City of Melville-based artists are welcome to share studio or exhibition space located within the City of Melville boundaries.

  2. The Melville Open Studios program is open to artists of all levels

  3. By agreeing to take part in Melville Open Studios, participating artists with studios are responsible for ensuring their studios are fully covered by appropriate Public Liability insurance. This also applies to the creative arts groups & associations, galleries and businesses involved.

  4. Participating artists and venues are responsible for ensuring their spaces are neat and presentable to the highest standard and free from hazards. Materials and equipment that may pose a risk should be removed or stored elsewhere. This could include scissors, cutting knives, toxic supplies etc.

  5. Participating artists are responsible for ensuring the security of personal possessions, cash and other valuables throughout the weekend.

  6. Participating artists are responsible for their personal safety and it is recommended that they are not alone throughout the event. They should also consider having a pre-considered plan should a studio visitor exhibit suspicious or unsociable behaviour.

  7. Any and all incidents should be reported to the Melville Open Studios coordinators

  8. Upon request participating artists will need to submit images of their work for non-commercial promotion of the Open Studios on the Melville Open Studios and Melville City’s website and social media. Artists will be credited whenever their images are used.

  9. Participating artists may be invited to will make themselves available for photography or video coordinated by the Melville Open Studios and City of Melville. The City of Melville reserves the right to use these studio images for all future promotional and marketing purposes associated with Open Studios.

  10. Participating artists will be provided with promotional materials including posters flyers and electronic content and are encouraged to market direct to their networks via email news and social media.

  11. Participating artists will be provided with signage which is to be displayed on the nearest roadside location.

  12. During the Open Studios event, participating artists will need to be present in their studios or nominated locations for the times as previously nominated, unless otherwise impossible due to unforeseen circumstances. In the case where an artist cannot be present, please inform the Melville Open Studios Coordinator at your earliest convenience and please leave a sign on your door to let visitors know you are not available.

  13. Post the event, participating artists will be asked to provide a visitation & sales summary to Melville Open Studios Coordinator and the City of Melville to assist with the City’s final report collation.

  14. Melville Open Studios reserves the right to withdraw any participating artist that does not comply with the Terms & Conditions deemed to be offensive or otherwise inappropriate to the aims of the Open Studios project.

  15. Melville Open Studios will coordinate the Open Studios participating artist’s and locations, the marketing plan and promotions including the brochure and map collations, printing and distribution, any sponsorship or partnership agreements, and project reporting.
